Volunteer Roles & Shift Hours

Client Check-in

  • Scheduled Order desk volunteers call and email clients to confirm their food pick-up, answer incoming calls when clients arrive and record their visits in our database. Customer service skills, comfort with using a computer database, and attention to detail are required. Monday - Friday 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM and 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM.
  • Client Check-in volunteers use a computer database to check in clients, provide pagers to clients and manages the client call-back process. A staff person is typically present to assist. Customer service skills, comfort with using a computer database, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment are required. The ability to speak Spanish is helpful but not required. Monday - Friday 12:30 PM - 3:30 PM, Monday nights 5:30 - 8:15 PM, and Saturday 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM. 
  • Concierge volunteers manage the waiting area, assist clients with their bread/sweets choices, and connect clients with their Shopper volunteer. Customer service skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment are required. Any level of Spanish-speaking skill is helpful but not necessary. Monday - Friday 12:30 PM - 3:30 PM, Monday nights 5:30 PM - 8:15 PM, and Saturday 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM. 

Drivers

  • Weekday drivers work with a partner to take Pantry vehicles to local stores to pick up donated food and drop off/pick up food drive barrels. A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds with a partner are required. Monday - Friday 8:45 PM - 1:00 PM.
  • Home Deliver drivers work with a partner recruited from friends and family to drive a short route in the city of Waukesha to deliver food to clients. Teams start at The Pantry to load food into a Pantry vehicle or their personal vehicle, make deliveries, and return to the Pantry with leftover items. A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record, the ability to lift up to 25 pounds, the ability to navigate the city of Waukesha, customer service skills, and attention to detail are required. Second and fourth Saturdays 8:45 AM - 11:00 AM. 

Food Recovery

  • Food Recovery volunteers work in teams to check the dates and quality of perishable foods, sort that food into crates according to its kind, weigh food and record data, and then store the food in the cooler/freezer as appropriate. The ability to lift up to 40 pounds within the team as needed, the ability to read small-print dates on packaging, attention to detail, a willingness to follow policies on food quality and expired food, and teamwork skills are required. This is an active role that has volunteers on their feet moving and lifting food for most of the shift. Monday - Friday 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM.   
  • Bread Sorting volunteers work alone or with a partner to check the dates and quality of bread and sweets, sort those items into labelled boxes, and organize them on shelves by date. The ability to lift up to 25 pounds, the ability to read small-print dates on packaging, attention to detail, and a willingness to follow policies on food quality and expired food are required. This is an active role that has volunteers on their feet moving and lifting food for most of the shift.  Monday - Friday 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM.
  • Sorting volunteers work with a team to check dates and quality on dry goods and sort those items into labelled crates. The ability to lift up to 40 pounds within the team as needed, the ability to read small-print dates on packaging, attention to detail, a willingness to follow policies on food quality and expired food, and teamwork skills are required. Volunteers are on their food moving and lifting food for most of the shift. Monday - Wednesday and Friday 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM.

Food Distribution

  • Scheduled Order Packing volunteers work with a team to assemble food orders on carts and take those carts out to clients waiting in the parking lot. The ability to read printed order forms and correctly assemble food items, lift up to 40 pounds within the team as needed, attention to detail, customer service skills, teamwork skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment are required. This is an active role with volunteers on their feet lifting food and moving carts for most of the shift. Monday - Friday 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM.
  • Shopper volunteers are paired with a client to assist them with their food choices at various stations as they walk through the client service area. Shoppers also help with station set-up and clean-up.  Excellent customer service skills, the ability to bend and lift food items from shelves, and the ability to lift up to 20 pounds within the team as needed are required. Any level of Spanish-speaking skill is helpful but not necessary. Monday - Friday 12:30 PM - 3:30 PM, Monday nights 5:30 PM - 8:15 PM, and Saturday 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM. 
  • Express volunteers work with a partner to assemble food orders on carts and help with station set-up and clean-up. The ability to bend and lift food items from shelves, to lift up to 40 pounds within the team as needed, and to work in a fast-paced environment are required. This is an active role with volunteers on their feet for most of the shift. Monday - Friday 12:30 PM - 3:30 PM, Monday nights 5:30 PM - 8:15 PM, and Saturday 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM. 
  • Stocker volunteers work with a team to transport food items from the warehouse to the client service area and then stock the cooler, freezer, and shelves. Stockers also retrieve shopping carts from the parking lot, break down cardboard boxes, and help with station set-up and clean-up. The ability to repeatedly bend and lift food items to shelves and carts, to lift up to 40 pounds, and to work in a fast-paced environment are required, along with good teamwork skills. This is a very active role with volunteers repeatedly walking to and from the warehouse in varied temperature conditions while using carts to transport heavy food items. Monday - Friday 12:30 PM - 3:30 PM, Monday nights 5:30 PM - 8:15 PM, and Saturday 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM. 

Other Roles

  • Pre-pack volunteers work with a team to prepare bags and boxes of non-perishable food items for client distribution. They also restock food stations in the service area. The ability to bend and lift food items to shelves and carts and to lift up to 40 pounds is required, along with attention to detail and good teamwork skills. This is an active role with volunteers on their feet for most of the shift. Monday - Friday 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM.
  • Warehouse volunteers assist with a wide variety of tasks. Possible tasks include repacking and/or relabelling food items, pre-sorting food items, light cleaning, and more. Depending on the task, the ability to bend and lift food items to carts and to lift up to 25 pounds (occasionally up to 40 pounds) is required, along with attention to detail and the ability to follow directions and work independently. A flexible schedule with shifts available Monday - Friday between 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM.
